It’s hard to believe, but October 23, 2025, will mark the 10th anniversary of the largest gas release in US history.

To commemorate this milestone of the Aliso Canyon methane blowout, Save Porter Ranch and Food & Water Watch have planned a town hall for Sunday, October 26, starting at 3 p.m. at the Porter Ranch Vineyards Community Room, 20065 Rinaldi St. on the second floor (around the corner from Gus’s Barbecue and to the north of La Popular).

Among the topics on the agenda will be the BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) and methane monitoring system, the ongoing health study, the TECH Clean California Healthy Homes project, AQMD well maintenance notifications, and detoxifying out those harmful chemicals from your body. Dr. Jeffrey Nordella will give his views on the health study.

Don Gamiles of Argos Scientific will be demonstrating how residents can use the fenceline monitoring website and the new phone app to check for elevated levels of the harmful chemicals being emitted by Aliso’s wells. The 2018 consent decree required SoCalGas to pay $1.5 million for the system, which will measure for methane and BTEX chemicals. Another million came from the 2017 settlement of the AQMD lawsuit against the gas company.

Updates for the health study will be given by the UCLA team of researchers. The next step will be a letter explaining the upcoming survey and clinical examinations. Dr. Nordella, who was the first medical professional to sound an alarm about the health risks from the blowout, will discuss whether he feels the study is on track.

Save Porter Ranch co-founder Matt Pakucko will explain what a Rule 1148.2 notification from the AQMD is and why residents should be concerned about the acidizing of the Aliso wells.

Residents will soon get a chance to apply for a heat pump and electrical upgrades through the TECH Clean California Healthy Homes project. Senator Henry Stern will discuss how homes and apartment buildings in the communities in the area affected by the blowout (10 miles from the damaged well, SS-25) will be prioritized for this program. $71 million in fines assessed against SoCalGas by the CPUC for its negligence that caused the blowout, will pay for the sustainability projects, along with providing shade for Valley schoolyards and air conditioning upgrades for community centers.

Kyoko Hibino of Save Porter Ranch and Happiluxe Design will be talking about practical personal and household detox protocols (air, water, home), with low-cost actions that families can use for a healthier life.

Residents will get a chance to ask questions and speak up about their concerns. The town hall will be followed by a meet and greet on the center’s patio.

Everyone is welcome to attend this informative event.
